What I'm Reading
F. Gonzalez-Crussi, The Five Senses. San Diego, New York, London: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1989. Gonzalez-Crussi, a pathologist, is a superb writer and an essayist of the first order. I so enjoyed his two other collections that I picked up this one. I found it easy to set aside, which indicates it's not quite as good as the other two.
Parker J. Palmer, A Hidden Wholeness: The Journey Toward An Undivided Life. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 2004. I was drawn to this book by its title, as well as by its author, an accomplished writer and teacher.
Billy Wayne Sinclair and Jodie Sinclair, Capital Punishment: An Indictment by a Death-Row Survivor. New York: Arcade, 2009. With a foreword by Sister Helen Prejean, the Sinclairs trace the history of capital punishment in the United States and offer details of many cases. Billy Wayne Sinclair often speaks from personal experience: from forty years in prison, the first several on death row, and from the past few years as a paralegal and counselor to death-row inmates.
Evelyn Underhill, Mysticism: A Study in the Nature and Development of Spiritual Consciousness. Mineola, NY: Dover Publications, 2002 ("an unabridged, unaltered republication of the twelfth edition [1930], published by E. P. Dutton and Company, of the work originally published in 1911"). This is probably still considered to be the master work on mysticism. It's a topic modern researchers seem to be avoiding, most likely because the usual social science research tools don't easily adapt to its somewhat ethereal nature. The Appendix is a quickie introduction of the better known mystics of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. There is also a bibliography, and the main text is heavy with footnotes. It is a scholarly work and sometimes quite dense, but worth the effort.

What I've Wred*

*I am adopting the spelling of a friend, whose creative genius with things mechanical lends exciting artistry to his spelling and a long-needed distinction between past and present tenses of the verb read. Thanks for that, Mac.

The following are primarily books I have wred since 1994, the year I enrolled at Vermont College in Montpelier, Vermont. The experience of completing my bachelor's degree as an adult learner at Vermont College has forever changed the way I read. I continue to take far too many notes and never fail to record the page number of any well-written phrase that I may someday wish to quote. CLICK ON THE TITLE TO READ THE REVIEW.
