|Deepak Chopra, The Third Jesus: The Christ we Cannot Ignore. New York: Harmony Books, 2008.||I anticipate that Chopra will interpret the story of Jesus in a sort of ecumenical way, that is, in a way that makes his teachings available and applicable to all spiritual paths.|
|Carol Lee Flinders, Enduring Grace: Living Portraits of Seven Women Mystics. HarperSanFrancisco, 1993.||Flinders selected seven of her favorite female mystics (all Roman Catholic) and studied their writings, both their published spiritual guides, as well as their personal letters. She seeks to humanize them by revealing details of their personal and family lives and sometimes their political struggles within the church.|
|Joel Fuhrman, Super Immunity: The Essential Nutrition Guide for Boosting Your Body's Defenses to Live Longer, Stronger, and Disease Free. New York: HarperOne, 2011.||Fuhrman first got my attention on a PBS special. I just want to see what he has to say.|
|F. Gonzalez-Crussi, The Five Senses. San Diego, New York, London: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1989.||Gonzalez-Crussi, a pathologist, is a superb writer and an essayist of the first order. I so enjoyed his two other collections that I picked up this one. I found it easy to set aside, which indicates it's not quite as good as the other two.|
|Rhoda Janzen, Mennonite in a Little Black Dress. New York: Henry Holt, 2009.||I love reading memoir, and this one has great reviews from critics and readers. Janzen is a very good writer and she's very funny—and very skilled at appropriately alleviating distressing circumstances with a dash of humor.|
|Maggie Nolan and Carrie Dawson (Eds.). Who's Who? Hoaxes, Imposture and Identity Crises in Australian Literature. Australian Literary Studies, Vol. 21, No. 4, 2004. University of Queensland Press.||I was trying to track down information on the Australian reaction to Marlo Morgan's hoax memoir of her trek in the Australian outback and came upon this title. The story of Morgan's outrageous hoax, which she continues to profitably perpetrate, is the subject of one of 12 academic investigations into literary hoaxes. I'm interested in this topic because it brings up a number of quandaries, not the least of which is the fact that many people claim reading Morgan's book changed their lives for the better. Does this justify the blatant dishonesty?|
|H. A. Overstreet, The Mature Mind. New York: W. W. Norton, 1949.||In my reading of the last of the three books written in the early 1950s by physician and spiritual healer Rebecca Beard, I came across several references to (and quotations from) Overstreet's The Mature Mind. Beard saw modern psychology as a key to the new science of "psychosomatic medicine," what today we label "mind-body" medicine. Her enthusiasm for Overstreet's theories caused me to buy it. In the first 65 pages, I am finding it to be a bit simplistic and not too scientific. Perhaps it will become better in the next 220 pages.|
|Parker J. Palmer, A Hidden Wholeness: The Journey Toward An Undivided Life. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 2004.||I was drawn to this book by its title, as well as by its author, and accomplished writer and teacher.|
|Matt Ridley, The Origins of Virtue: Human Instincts and the Evolution of Cooperation. New York: Viking, 1996.||I picked up this title from one of the books I read on evil. I've read another of Ridley's books about science and look forward to another entertaining and educational read.|
|Billy Wayne Sinclair and Jodie Sinclair, Capital Punishment: An Indictment by a Death-Row Survivor. New York: Arcade, 2009.||With a foreword by Sister Helen Prejean, the Sinclairs trace the history of capital punishment in the United States and offer details of many cases. Billy Wayne Sinclair often speaks from personal experience: from forty years in prison, the first several on death row, and from the past few years as a paralegal and counselor to death-row inmates.|
|Evelyn Underhill, Mysticism: A Study in the Nature and Development of Spiritual Consciousness. Mineola, NY: Dover Publications, 2002 ("an unabridged, unaltered republication of the twelfth edition , published by E. P. Dutton and Company, of the work originally published in 1911").||This is probably still considered to be the master work on mysticism. It's a topic modern researchers seem to be avoiding, most likely because the usual social science research tools don't easily adapt to its somewhat ethereal nature. The Appendix is a quickie introduction of the better known mystics of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. There is also a bibliography, and the main text is heavy with footnotes. It is a scholarly work and sometimes quite dense, but worth the effort.|
|Elisabeth Young-Bruehl, Hannah Arendt: For Love of the World. New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 1982.||Granted, I've read very little philosophy, but I was nonetheless surprised that I'd never heard the name of Hannah Arendt before, even though this biography reveals that she was a close friend or acquaintance of many names I had heard. I came looking for her after hearing the same quotation twice: "The only control we have over the past is forgiveness." I'm about three quarters through this lengthy volume, and I am so glad I finally began this book that has been sitting on a shelf awaiting my attention for the past three years. Included in the life story of a brilliant woman are details that I'd never before heard about World War II, as well as many I'd long since forgotten. Along with the facts of Arendt's life, Young-Bruehl has included the details of her developing philosophy, which became primarily political philosophy in the years following the war.|
*I am adopting the spelling of a friend, whose creative genius with things mechanical lends exciting artistry to his spelling and a long-needed distinction between past and present tenses of the verb read. Thanks for that, Mac.
|The following are primarily books I have wred since 1994, the year I enrolled at Vermont College in Montpelier, Vermont. The experience of completing my bachelor's degree as an adult learner at Vermont College has forever changed the way I read. I continue to take far too many notes and never fail to record the page number of any well-written phrase that I may someday wish to quote. CLICK ON THE TITLE TO READ THE REVIEW.|
